There’s always something exciting happening in the world of African safaris, and 2027 is shaping up to be a particularly interesting year. From intimate new camps in Botswana’s Okavango Delta to beautifully redesigned lodges in South Africa, a new generation of safari properties is bringing fresh perspectives to some of our favorite wilderness areas.
At African Portfolio, we rarely recommend places we haven’t personally experienced, but every lodge featured here is operated by partners we know and trust—brands with a proven commitment to conservation, meaningful community engagement, and exceptional guiding. We’re confident that each of these new (and improved) additions will deliver experiences that feel both authentic and unforgettable. Let us help you plan your next safari to include one or more of these wonderful new luxury lodges!
Mokolwane Plains — Botswana, opening in July 2027
One of the most exciting additions to Botswana’s safari scene, Mokolwane Plains will open in the southern Okavango Delta, within a vast private concession renowned for its leopard sightings. With just five spacious tented suites, private plunge pools and sweeping views across the floodplains, the camp promises an intimate safari experience with exceptional guiding and access to both land and water activities.
One of the Sabi Sand’s best-known safari retreats is undergoing a complete transformation. Ulusaba’s Safari Lodge and Rock Lodge are being reimagined with elegant suites, private plunge pools, expansive viewing decks and enhanced wellness facilities, while retaining the exceptional wildlife experience for which this private reserve is known. Safari Lodge begins welcoming guests in January, with the full reopening planned for April. Three or four nights at Ulusaba would be a wonderful conclusion to a South African itinerary combining Cape Town, the Cape Winelands and a Big Five safari.
Musesenji River Camp — Zambia, opening in April 2027
For travelers who love a more adventurous safari, Musesenji River Camp promises something special. Located in a remote eastern section of Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park, where the Musesenji River meets the Zambezi, this intimate camp will feature just six luxury tents, each with a private plunge pool. Days can be spent exploring on game drives, guided walks and river excursions, with excellent opportunities to encounter elephants and other wildlife. We’d recommend pairing Musesenji with three or four nights in South Luangwa.
Wilderness Etosha — Namibia, opening in July/August 2027
