I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Vilanculos, Mozambique’s hidden coastal gem. Conveniently accessible with daily flights from Johannesburg and direct connections from the Kruger, Vilanculos is the perfect destination to blend the adventure of a safari with the serenity of the beach.
This part of Mozambique is especially popular for our honeymooners, who are drawn to its “castaway” charm and laid-back atmosphere. Families also find plenty to love in the array of activities—from traditional dhow sailing to world-class snorkeling and diving in the crystal-clear waters. Beyond its natural beauty, Vilanculos offers meaningful ways to engage with and support local communities, adding depth to your stay.
While the lodges here provide all-inclusive packages for food and drinks, this is far from a typical “all-inclusive party” scene. Instead, it’s a haven for those who appreciate tranquility, authenticity, and pristine surroundings.
Santorini
Santorini is a breeze to get to from Vilanculos airport, with daily flights and just a 20-minute scenic drive from the airport to the Villa. When you arrive, you’ll find yourself in a slice of coastal heaven. The Main Villa is a dream for ocean lovers, offering five sea-facing, air-conditioned en-suite bedrooms, each with its own private patio to soak in the breathtaking views. The living area is just as stunning, with a cozy lounge, a TV room, a martini pool on the ocean-facing deck, and serene secluded patios. If that’s not enough, there’s a wind-protected courtyard pool and multiple dining spaces for all-day relaxation.
For couples seeking romance, The Chapel is perfect. This two-bedroom villa faces the ocean and includes its own lounge, kitchen, dining room, private pool, and patio—everything you need for an intimate escape.
If you’re traveling with a group, Villa da Praia is ideal. This spacious four-bedroom villa, perfect for up to 10 guests.
What I loved most about Santorini was the variety of beautiful dining spots—each meal felt like a fresh experience, whether it was on the beach with a picnic lunch, soaking up the sun, or lounging with a good book. For ultimate relaxation, there’s the spa, or you can embark on an afternoon dhow cruise. Cruising along the coast as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean is an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.
One thing to keep in mind about the main island is that the tides shift quite a bit, which can affect the beaches. When the tide goes out, you’ll notice more sandy areas and maybe some interesting tide pools to explore. It creates a dynamic atmosphere where you can enjoy different beach experiences throughout the day!

AsDunas

Just 10 minutes from Santorini, my next stop was AsDunas, a peaceful escape with stunning ocean views. With only eight suites, each featuring its own private pool, it’s the perfect spot for a quiet retreat. Sand pathways wind through the beautiful grounds, giving the whole place a laid-back feel. The main area has a great bar with a variety of cocktails, and you can relax in the outdoor lounge or by the main pool. They also offer a complimentary spa treatment each day overlooking the beach, plus a beautiful sunset experience on the dunes.
There’s plenty to do if you’re looking for adventure. You can explore the five islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago by boat, go whale watching, try kite surfing, canoeing, or snorkeling, or even take a morning trip to Vilanculos for a visit to a local market.
I loved my time here – it had a safari-like vibe, with the endless rhythm of the ocean instead of animals. It’s a peaceful, unique experience that’s hard to beat.
What I would note is that it is not a premium luxury property, but it delivers outstanding value.

Azura Benguerra

The last stop on my Mozambique adventure was Azura Benguerra, accessible by a quick 7-minute helicopter ride — a perfect way to finish the trip. The view of the island from the air over the blue ocean was spectacular.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the entire management team and whisked straight to the main area, which overlooks the ocean. The property has 20 beautiful villas, all lining the beach. Each one comes with its own private plunge pool and is just a short walk to the beach. What I loved here is that the tides don’t seem to be as noticeable as at the other two spots I visited, which made it feel even more peaceful.
Breakfast and lunch are served outdoors with a view of the beach, and dinners are spread out along the property, often right by the water. The atmosphere reminds me a bit of the Caribbean — there are evening activities you can join, but you’re also free to do your own thing.
They’ve got a water sports shop where you can book various activities, plus you can use kayaks and paddleboards whenever you want. A highlight for me was the scenic island tour, where I got to see the island from a whole new perspective. Of course, the dhow sunset cruise was another must-do.
I was lucky enough to squeeze in a snorkeling trip to 2 Mile Reef, and I’d highly recommend it — the coral reef and fish were incredible. There are also plenty of other optional activities to choose from, like island-hopping picnics, trips to Paradise Island, and scuba diving.
One of the best things for me was simply walking out of my villa and onto the beach. I spent hours strolling along the shore, collecting shells, and soaking in the peaceful vibes. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable adventure.
What I would note is that all the pathways are composed of crushed seashells, so it’s advisable to wear sturdy shoes or water shoes while walking on these pathways.
