South Africa’s oldest city lends itself to walking, with some of the oldest landmarks in easy reach of the city center. This guided tour will take in such sights as St George’s Mall – a lively pedestrian area with coffee shops, buskers and curio vendors; the colorful market of Greenmarket Square, Grand Parade and City Hall – the city’s oldest square; the Old Customs House; the Slave Tree site; the Castle of Good Hope – which is the oldest occupied building in SA; the Company Gardens, St. George’s Cathedral and the South African Museum among others. You then have the option of a walk through Bo Kaap, The Cape Malay community neighborhood distinguished by the rainbow colored houses, or a visit to the Jewish Heritage Museum. More than just a look at some ‘old buildings’, this is a journey back in time to glimpse what life was like over the last few centuries in the Mother City. Also included is an excursion to Table Mountain, providing spectacular views over the city and Peninsula (weather dependent). The five-minute ascent to the top of Table Mountain offers a 360° view of Cape Town, the ocean and the neighboring peaks.
Begin this full day tour of the Cape Peninsula with a visit to the African Penguin breeding colony at Boulders Beach. From there you drive to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, one of the world’s most breathtaking coastal drives. The Cape of Good Hope functioned as something of a beacon for sailors for many years and is still widely referred to as ‘The Cape’ by seafarers. The reserve is home to an array of fynbos, over 250 species of birds, buck, baboons and Cape mountain zebra. If you are feeling energetic enough, we highly recommend a walk from the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Point. From there you will board a funicular to get to the Lighthouse (at the top of the Peninsula) to witness the symbolic meeting of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, offering spectacular views over False Bay. As you leave the reserve, you head to Noordhoek for a delightful lunch at The Food Barn (for your own account). You then return via a drive along Chapman’s Peak Drive to Constantia Nek and onto the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens or Constantia Winery for a taste of history.
Spend the morning savoring traditional food and wine of the Cape as your culinary guide leads you through the historic heart of Stellenbosch. Try Biltong and Bobotie, Koeksisters and Melktert while meeting a host of colourful characters en route! Between tasting stops, you’ll hear delightful stories about the historic places you visit as well. In the afternoon, you will have a private guide and vehicle to explore the Cape Winelands at your leisure.
