Here’s what’s happening in May in Africa:
East Africa
- In East Africa, it’s traditionally a very wet month, so some camps in Kenya and Tanzania are still on hiatus.
- The great migration begins to slowly head north towards central and western Serengeti.
- It’s lush and green in Rwanda and in mid – May the rainy season is coming to an end so it’s a good time to avoid the crowds and go gorilla trekking. For birdwatchers, it’s the breeding season so there is plenty to see in the skies as well.
Southern Africa
- The dry season officially begins, so pack a fleece and a thin windbreaker for frigid wind chills on early morning and night game drives.
- As the green vegetation begins to fade predators thrive as their colors blend in with the surroundings.
- Migratory birds begin to head north to their breeding areas.
- Floodwaters from the Angolan highlands start reaching the Okavango Delta and begin a slow deliberate flow deep into the heart of Botswana.
- This is a great time to take advantage of awesome wildlife viewing at shoulder season rates.
Indian Ocean
- The East African coast and islands of Zanzibar are still a little wet this time of year.
- Water temperatures are perfect and warm in the Seychelles, and visibility is excellent for those of you looking for some spectacular snorkeling and diving, as well as white beaches and plenty of sunshine.
- In Mozambique the diving and snorkeling conditions are very good, with dry and warm weather.
Cape Town & Surroundings
- Expect some cloudy and rainy days as the typically mild winter arrives in Cape Town.
- The social scene moves inside with plenty of indoor markets, live music nights, theater festivals, and classic movie screenings at the iconic Labia Theatre.
- Cape Town hosts the world renowned Marimba-, Steel Band-, and Big Band Jazz Festival.
- With the harvest done, the fruits of the vine are celebrated in earnest with amongst others, a Pinotage Festival in Stellenbosch, a Cabernet Franc Festival in Paarl, and a Shiraz and Charcuterie Festival in Franschhoek
