Vanessa’s Whirlwind Tour of the Winelands

After a fast and furious couple of days in Cape Town, I changed the pace, with a scenic 45-minute drive to the Cape Winelands, where our first stop was the charming Oude Werf Hotel in Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch itself is a quaint university town, filled with character and energy thanks to the students from the University of Stellenbosch. The town offers a lovely blend of boutique shops, cozy coffee spots, art galleries, and excellent restaurants — all within walking distance. This is Yvette’s hometown, so it was lovely to visit all her favorite spots as well!

If you’re looking to stay somewhere walkable and full of charm, Stellenbosch is a fantastic choice. It’s perfect for those who enjoy strolling through town, discovering unique local gems, and soaking in the relaxed, wine-country vibe.

Delaire Graff Estate

I spent my first night in the Winelands at the gorgeous Delaire Graff Estate — and what an experience it was! From the moment you arrive, you’re surrounded by breathtaking views over the vineyards and mountains. The estate truly offers the full package: a world-class wine tasting, exceptional cuisine, and beautifully curated art displayed throughout the lush gardens and grounds.

As the sun set, I enjoyed a memorable evening of fine food and wine, soaking in the peaceful ambiance and the estate’s undeniable elegance. It’s a perfect choice for anyone wanting to indulge in the luxury and beauty that the Cape Winelands are known for.

Leeu House – Franschhoek Charm

Franschhoek has always held a special place in my heart, and this visit was no exception. I spent a wonderfully relaxing evening at Leeu House, a beautifully appointed boutique property ideally located right in the heart of town. The central location makes it perfect for exploring this quaint, walkable village, known for its world-class restaurants, art galleries, and small-town charm. Everything is just a short stroll away, making it easy to soak in the atmosphere at your own pace.

For dinner, I met up with family at the Tuk Tuk Microbrewery — a laid-back spot with great food, craft beer, and a fun, welcoming vibe. It was the perfect way to end the day, surrounded by good company and the energy of this delightful town.

During my time in the Winelands, I also had the opportunity to explore several other standout properties, each offering its own unique charm and experience:

  • Lanzerac Hotel & Spa – A historic estate in Stellenbosch known for its classic elegance, beautiful grounds, and luxurious spa. A wonderful mix of heritage and comfort.
  • Babylonstoren – A must-see for anyone who appreciates farm-to-table living, with expansive gardens, chic accommodation, and a serene atmosphere. It’s a true destination in itself, but can get busy with “day tourists” during the summer months.
  • The Last Word Franschhoek – An intimate and stylish property located right in town. It’s peaceful, personal, and perfect for a relaxing stay with easy access to Franschhoek’s dining scene. Excellent value and one of our favorites!
  • Avondrood Guest House – A charming and beautifully run guest house offering warm hospitality and a cozy atmosphere — a great option for travelers looking for something intimate and welcoming.
  • Leeu Estates – The pinnacle of luxury and refinement, set on expansive grounds just outside Franschhoek. It combines art, nature, and top-tier service in an incredibly tranquil setting.
  • Le Quartier Français – Stylish and modern, yet warm and inviting. With its award-winning dining and central location, it’s a fantastic spot for food lovers and those wanting to immerse themselves in the village vibe.
