We were on safari in Tanzania and were staying in Sabora Tented Camp in the Grumeti Reserve. We had just seen a large group of young lions, and as we turned the corner, we came upon two couples mating. If anyone is familiar with lions mating, you’ll know they do it frequently and quickly, for hours on end. In this particular case the male would stop his “business” a little abruptly and what you see here in the photo is the female’s response to that! We loved this safari in Tanzania as we got to see a lot of wildlife without other vehicles around us, we had this whole scene to ourselves. We also went Gorilla tracking in Rwanda on this trip which was fantastic.
We’ve been on safari 3 times, all with African Portfolio, and they were all memorable. I can’t think of any favorite moments, as it was all great. Last year we went to Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia, The dunes in Namibia were just awe inspiring. In 2005 we took our first safari in Botswana and South Africa, and I would love to go back there again. Our first safari was probably the most special as we were experiencing it all for the first time.

This photo was taken in Mashatu, in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve of Botswana bordering South Africa. We were there on safari in 2009, traveling with a group of 16. We were on a morning game drive, with an elephant naturalist from the elephant research project. We had been enjoying watching this group for while, when I spotted these little guys just snuggling each other and thought they looked so cozy.
Our safari was in 2009, and we had spent a few nights in Cape Town before we flew to Mashatu where we stayed 3 nights and had a wonderful time. We especially enjoyed being able to go off road to follow the animals and get close. After Mashatu, we spent 3 nights in Pafuri, followed by 3 nights in Mala Mala which was spectacular. We enjoyed all three camps, they were all different. In Mala Mala we saw the “Big Five”. The trip ended at Victoria Falls where we treated to a dinner with Blessing from Wilderness Safaris. He invited us to his home, and it was really special.
The whole trip was memorable, there were so many great moments, the sunsets, the wildlife, it was probably the best trip we have ever taken, and we travel all over.
April is now open for your photo submissions, we are looking forward to sharing your memories with you! Find out a little more about our Photo Competition here. Don’t forget to send your submissions in jpeg format to: [email protected]
