Full Name Katherine Joyce
How would you rate your trip overall? Excellent
What was the most important reason for choosing AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? Other
Please Specify Fodor’s recommended
How many safari companies did you consider before selecting AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? One or Two
What additional information (if any) would you have liked to receive prior to your departure from home? Inconsequential but there is a $15/person airport tax on charter flights from Victoria Falls that travelers need cash for
How would you describe your accommodation, facilities and meals? Please provide the name of the hotel, lodge or camp you are describing. Four Rosemead – 5 stars – great breakfast, service and amazing views from our balcony
Davison’s – 5 stars – EXACTLY what we wanted from our safari and more. Good food, amazing guides and our room was PERFECT. When we return to Africa, I’ll absolutely stay with Wilderness Safaris again.
Imbabala – food was great; guide was knowledgeable but there just aren’t many animals here. Accommodations were ok; most everyone found scorpions in there rooms and plenty of spiders. I realize it’s the bush of course! If I were to do it over, I’d stay a night (maybe 2) in order to do a river cruise and see the falls, then move on
What and where was your favorite meal of the trip? Kloof Street House – Cape Town – amazing steaks
How would you evaluate your safari guides and staff? Please provide the name of the person you are describing. Richard – Davison’s; we told Richard we’d like to see “cats” when we landed. We knew a leopard would be hard, but he spotted one for us 15 minutes after the air strip. He also made a valiant effort to find us a cheetah. Very knowledgeable; taught us a lot and really made our time at Davison’s enjoyable.
Garth – 2 days in Cape Town – extremely knowledgeable; great to talk too; catered to our desire to hike a bit at Cape of Good Hope. Really enjoyed our time with him – would highly recommend (our other Wilderness Safari guide in Cape Town was great too – I just can’t remember her name!)
Richard – Imbabala – knowledgeable and personable; we just didn’t see much here
Was there anything you would have liked more of, less of, or done differently? Looking back, I would have spent a little less time at Vic Falls and increased our budget and trip length a bit to do another camp in the bush
What was your most memorable moment in Africa? The lions at Davison’s were so much fun to watch. We saw them climbing trees, fighting, eating and playing; we really saw a lot there. Cape Town was also amazing. The peninsula tour was one of our favorite days: seeing penguins was truly memorable and walking from the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Point was breathtaking
If you could give future travelers one word of advice, what would it be? Every day in the bush is different! Even if you see the same animals – no sighting is the same! Take it all in! And don’t write off the birds – from lilac breasted rollers to fish eagles; the bird life in Africa was an unexpected surprise for us.
