Comment:

Taryn was wonderful and helped us enormously when we needed to make an itinerary change at the last minute.

What additional information (if any) would you have liked to receive prior to your departure from home?

We were well-prepared in advance and everything was very smooth once we arrived.

How would you describe your accommodation, facilities and meals? Please provide the name of the hotel, lodge or camp you are describing.

All facilities were excellent. Tintswalo tried very hard with the food but our “private chef” Karla was in over her head. She was sweet and tried hard but clearly was inexperienced. The outdoor boma was our best meal by far.

Old Drift Lodge was beautiful with a clean, modern aesthetic and lovely, comfortable rooms and outdoor shower/bath. They also had an excellent breakfast Machaba had home-style food that was mostly delicious.

The breakfasts were lovely at the Cape Heritage hotel, but our room was not great. Floors sloped oddly and it was very small. That said, they accommodated us two days earlier than originally booked, so we were grateful!

What and where was your favorite meal of the trip?

Christmas Eve at Machaba Camp was very special. Not because of the food, which was fine, but because the staff (including Shawn’s two children) danced and sang to us as we gathered around the campfire before dinner. It was beautiful and emotional and something we will always remember.

We also really enjoyed Marble in Johannesburg and Chef’s Warehouse, Tjing Tjing, The Shortmarket Club and Thalia in Cape Town

How would you evaluate your safari guides and staff? Please provide the name of the person you are describing.

Alistair and Wise at Tintswalo and Shawn at Machaba Camp were just incredible. We could not have asked for more knowledgeable and interesting guides. We learned so much from them and enjoyed their company. A top-notch guide makes all the difference as we were so fortunate to have both of them.

The guide at Old Drift Lodge was nice enough, but not remarkable. The dining staff was wonderfully gracious and friendly. The young guide who took us to Victoria Falls was adorable! Sweet and patient and very interesting.

The guide/driver on our first day in Johannesburg who took us to the Apartheid Museum and to Soweto was just wonderful as was the guide/driver on our last day in Cape Town who took us to the Winelands and to the airport. I wish I could recall their names because they were both outstanding.

Was there anything you would have liked more of, less of, or done differently?

It was a perfect trip

What was your most memorable moment in Africa?

We had so many memorable moments, it is hard to select just one. One that does stand out is our very first afternoon at Tintswalo when we saw cheetahs and a leopard eating an impala and then enjoyed our very first sundowner. It was a magical day.

If you could give future travelers one word of advice, what would it be?

Choose your travel agent wisely because you really need to trust their advice and judgement–it’s very difficult for first-time travelers to understand the safari experience and to compare properties.
