The Jones Family
How would you rate your trip overall? Excellent
Comment: Best trip we have ever taken. The family loved it so much we are just now booking a return to Africa for next Christmas! Anouk was absolutely amazing to work with and the planning and logistics was all perfectly executed.
What was the most important reason for choosing AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? Expertise
Please Specify: We know Anouk from living in the Boulder area and her expertise and passion on planning Africa trips with great credibility is why we chose African Portfolio
Comment: Anouk did an amazing job for us-she represents your company as well as you could possibly hope. Everything was tightly planned and her advice was always on the mark. She knows Africa very well and it shows.
How many safari companies did you consider before selecting AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? Three or Four
How would you rate AFRICAN PORTFOLIO’S representatives in Africa?
Excellent – Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia
Comment: All logistics were executed exceptionally. Quite honestly, it was my number one worry about the trip and it was taken care of in a first class manner that took all worry away. Jackie Smith, our guide in Cape Town, was especially great and really connected with our three teenagers.
What additional information (if any) would you have liked to receive prior to your departure from home? None
How would you describe your accommodation, facilities and meals?
Botswana: &Beyond Sandibe. We absolutely loved everything about this camp, so much so that we are booking a return visit for next year. Everything-our rooms, the food (loved the pizzas for lunch even!) and the service was top notch.
Cape Town: V&A Waterfront. Perfect location, rooms were fine for what we needed, breakfast was actually better than we expected. We would stay there again if we ever returned to Cape Town
Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls River Lodge. Great location, tents were much better than expected-lots of room and nice setup. Food was solid, service was great.
South Africa: Tintswalo. We were very disappointed with our stay at this camp. Our rooms were fine-very nice. Our Ranger, Neil, was also very good. Admittedly the rain impacted our stay. But our tracker was terrible and the camp manger, Tammi, was the least favorite person any of our family dealt with on our trip-she actually even tried to talk us out of going on safari and told us just to hang out in our rooms (only there for two days – didn’t go to Africa to just hang in the room all day) when it turned out that ended up being our best day there with game drives-she was very passive aggressive. Food was below expectations, especially the dinners. Service was just okay. Even on the safari vehicles, there were not enough ponchos or blankets for our family of five even though the weather was inclement.
What and where was your favorite meal of the trip?
Sandibe-probably the Boma was the best overall, though we loved the breakfasts and lunches as well. I did enjoy eating KingClip in CapeTown multiple times!
How would you evaluate your safari guides and staff?
Sandibe: SK was our Ranger and Joel was our tracker. They were beyond amazing in everything they did. Can’t say enough good things about them-our entire family agreed. As mentioned earlier, we are returning to Sandibe next year and we have a very strong request for SK (and Joel) again-the family was be very disappointed if it didn’t work out (which I understand can’t be guaranteed). SK requested us to request him when we came back multiple times-and thaw as before he saw my tip-so I think everyone really enjoyed each other
Cape Town: As I mentioned earlier, Jackie Smith was exceptional. She is a very outdoors oriented person so really matched up well with our family. She was great.
Victoria Falls: Polite was our guide and he was great-very knowledgable and passionate
Tintswalo: Neil was a good Ranger for us. Nice guy, tried hard. Israel was not a good tracker at all-my son found many more things than he did and he often was disinterested.
Was there anything you would have liked more of, less of, or done differently?
We would not have gone to Kruger/Tintswalo. The entire culture there was not good.
What was your most memorable moment in Africa?
Seeing three female lions kill a water buffalo-we saw everything-and then seeing the one female go get her cub and return with the cub so it could feed. Just amazing. Second was probably doing the Devil’s Pool at Victoria Falls-we will never forget it (and I will never do it again!). But most thrilling thing we have done, and we have done a lot of thrilling things!
If you could give future travelers one word of advice, what would it be?
Definitely look into the details of your itinerary and make sure it matches up with what your style is and your expectations
