Sharon and Lewis W.

Full Name Sharon W
How would you rate your trip overall? Excellent
Comment: It was a great trip that ran smoothly, thanks to the hard work and excellent advice from Vanessa. We really loved working with her. From my first conversation with her, I knew she would be our choice for tour operator.
What was the most important reason for choosing AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? Expertise
Please Specify Highly rated in Fodors. I called several of the recommended operators and had the best conversation with Vanessa, so that helped me make my choice right away
Comment: As per above, your company responded immediately and demonstrated deep knowledge, asking great questions and putting me at ease right away. ┬áVanessa’s warmth and expertise, and humor, came through strongly and was the major factor in our decision to go with African Portfolio.
How many safari companies did you consider before selecting AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? Five or More
Comment: We did have one small glitch with Ranger Safaris — their itinerary did not have certain items listed in African Portfolio’s — but once that was settled, all else went well. Our guide from Ranger, Edward, was excellent.
What additional information (if any) would you have liked to receive prior to your departure from home? We had what we needed. As above, the only issue was a discrepancy between AP’s itinerary and the one we saw on site from Ranger. The latter did not include our balloon ride (the reason we had some confusion there later) nor our night game drive at Treetops. That said, it all worked out fine.
How would you describe your accommodation, facilities and meals? Please provide the name of the hotel, lodge or camp you are describing. We loved all the lodges/camps, perhaps especially Treetops, Grumeti and Serengeti Migration Camp. The “rooms.” facilities and meals were top-notch. Best food at the Migration Camp, but no bad meals anywhere. The service everywhere was 5-star! We loved all our guides and camp staff.
What and where was your favorite meal of the trip? A special, private dinner for Barbara H at the Manor, complete with the staff singing and dancing a traditional Swahili dance. It was her birthday, although not sure the staff knew that until they brought us downstairs to the beautifully set table. Also, a private dinner on a balcony overlooking the Serengeti at the Migration Camp. Magical!
How would you evaluate your safari guides and staff? Please provide the name of the person you are describing. Our guides were all outstanding: Edward from Ranger Safaris, Aron at Grumet, John at Migration Camp and Etienne at Primate Safaris in Rwanda. Also a shout-out to Nic (Nicholas), our outstanding butler at Treetops. Too many other names to recall, but everyone was warm. friendly and helpful.
Was there anything you would have liked more of, less of, or done differently? Much as we liked the Manor, we probably would have been better off staying closer to the crater. It was a long drive.
What was your most memorable moment in Africa? The balloon ride over the Serengeti. Being so close to lions, elephants and cheetahs. Too many great moments to pick just one.
If you could give future travelers one word of advice, what would it be? Expect and revel in a completely different environment and culture. Enjoy the genuine warmth and friendliness of the people.
