How would you rate your trip overall? Excellent
Comment: An absolutely superb trip – can’t wait to go back!
What was the most important reason for choosing AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? Expertise
Comment: There is a lot of information about safaris on the internet, but no way for us to judge the quality of that information. It was absolutely critical that our agent be able to provide expertise well above and beyond what we can read in glossy brochures and slick websites. Anouk did just that. From Cape Town restaurants to camp selection and everything in between, she was able to provide recommendations and expertise that allowed us to make well-informed decisions.
How many safari companies did you consider before selecting AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? Three or Four
How would you rate AFRICAN PORTFOLIO’S representatives in Africa?
Botswana and South Africa – Excellent
Comment: We contacted African Portfolio knowing we wanted to travel to Botswana, and the level of expertise provided about the country was outstanding.
What additional information (if any) would you have liked to receive prior to your departure from home? It would have been nice to have a little bit more information about the landscapes and animal and plant life that we might see at the various camps in advance.
How would you describe your accommodation, facilities and meals?
All were first rate. I especially liked Machaba; the staff there, led by Elka, created a wonderful, informal, family-like atmosphere.
What and where was your favorite meal of the trip?
The Test Kitchen in Cape Town.
How would you evaluate your safari guides and staff?
All of our guides were good, but I want to especially highlight Shaun at Machaba. I’m a serious photographer, and Shaun was just about the best possible guide for me; he is a photographer himself, and it was a bit like having a photographic safari without having to actually join one.
Was there anything you would have liked more of, less of, or done differently?
The weather in Botswana was a bit colder than expected, and we were not completely prepared. I would have liked to bring a few warmer items (more long sleeved shirts, for example), and would suggest updating the pre-trip information to include fewer warm weather items (we could never wear shorts, for example) for clients traveling in the Botswana winter
What was your most memorable moment in Africa?
Our very first morning on safari, I was walking back to my tent before the game drive, having forgotten sunscreen. All of a sudden, an impala sprang from the bushes and sprinted across the path not 20 feet in front of me. A split second later, two wild dogs emerged from the bush and gave chase. I quickly returned to the main area and told our guide Shaun what I had just witnessed; a few minutes later we found the entire pack of 12 dogs and watched them enjoy their impala breakfast along the Khwai River as the sun rose behind them.
If you could give future travelers one word of advice, what would it be?
Be patient! Our best sightings were those in which we came upon a merely good sighting, and then waited. So many times we watched other safari vehicles leave a sighting prematurely, only for the animal to do something incredible a few minutes later.
