Bob and Carol Stange

How would you rate your trip overall? Excellent
Comment: Great lodging choices, scenery, wonderful food, and excellent guides.
What was the most important reason for choosing AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? Expertise
Comment: Your company was recommended in Fodor’s South Africa book.
How many safari companies did you consider before selecting AFRICAN PORTFOLIO? None
Comment: Took care of friends we were traveling with who had to rearrange some travel plans due to missed airplane connections.
How would you describe your accommodation, facilities and meals? Please provide the name of the hotel, lodge or camp you are describing. 1.Kings Camp accommodation was very good and their food was excellent. Great massage as well.
2.Leopard Hills accommodations were excellent and their food was good (food was almost too gourmet).
3.Rovos Train accommodations were a little less than satisfactory because we couldn’t get our room warm enough.  In hindsight we probably would have preferred a room with twin beds so we didn’t have to disturb our spouses getting out of the bed to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Some of our friends didn’t care for the amount of rough “rocking” of the train.  All of us did enjoy the dining room and their excellent food service as well as the observation cars!  Everyone did comment that it was a great way to see a lot of the countryside.
4.More Quarters accommodations were very good with great breakfasts.  In hindsight we probably didn’t need the full suites because we found we really didn’t use the extra space.
5.Oude Werf accommodations were good with excellent breakfasts.
6.Grootbos was excellent!!  Lovely accommodations with outstanding views!  Food was very good.  Loved the prepared fires in the rooms each night.
7.City Lodge was OK but could not get the room warm enough. Food was good.

Service was excellent at all accommodations!!!!!

What and where was your favorite meal of the trip? Bob:  Last night’s meal at Grootbos in the Wine Cellar with beef fillet as meal choice.

Carol: La Motte lunch in Franschhoek.  Superb beef fillet and beet salad!!

How would you evaluate your safari guides and staff? Please provide the name of the person you are describing. All of our guides were excellent!  The guides in the Safari Lodges had an incredible depth of knowledge about the animals. Probably one of the most outstanding guides was a man named “Garth” who took us on a tour of Capetown our first full day there.  Gave us a very in depth history of the Capetown area and South Africa in general.
Was there anything you would have liked more of, less of, or done differently? The group as a whole got tired of lengthy gourmet lunches.  Simpler fare, served more quickly would have been preferable most of the time with some exceptions.  At Grootbos we started to ask for our lunches to be served in our rooms, which they graciously accommodated.
What was your most memorable moment in Africa? Bob: Seeing all the wild animals up so closely!

Carol:  Seeing all the wild animals so close and personal.  It was very surreal!  I also couldn’t get enough of the view at Grootbos.  Exceptional!!

If you could give future travelers one word of advice, what would it be? Go, and visit several different regions of South Africa!
