Mnemba Island Lodge lies two kms off the northeastern tip of Zanzibar Island mainland. The island is 1.5 kms in circumference and is surrounded by a tropical Indian Ocean coral reef. Hand-woven from traditional Zanzibarian palm-matting, the 10 secluded bandas on Mnemba Island have been built on platforms raised off the beach sand, and carefully located to ensure absolute privacy. Each banda is made of natural local materials, each featuring a spacious bathroom with shower, twin hand-basins and separate bathrooms. The elevated bedrooms are generously proportioned and simply furnished with king sized, extra-length beds swathed in billowing muslin nets. Beach level verandas offer built-in barazas – perfect for afternoon siestas, comfortable chairs for reading and a writing table. There are also outdoor swing beds, and private beach salas feature traditional Zanzibari loungers. Detailed woodcarvings and the scrolled headboards adorning the beds are created by some of Zanzibars most skilled artisans. Guest areas are all open sided, cooled by sea breezes, informal and relaxed, and allow unimpeded, breathtaking sea views. Baskets of fresh fruit, fish and lobsters are brought by traditional outriggers to Mnemba’s shore, to be prepared as exquisite and exotic delicacies, so fresh fish is served at both lunch and dinner. Guests can enjoy snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking and scuba diving. A small library offers a selection of wildlife books, games and magazines. A variety of diving courses and deep-sea fishing is available at an additional charge. All scuba and snorkeling equipment is provided.
