Duma Tau

The name Duma Tau means “roar of the lion”—thrillingly appropriate for this well-placed camp set amid the untouched wilderness of the Savute Channel. As you explore the marshes, lagoons and grasslands here, the landscape comes alive with a spectacular diversity of animals, including lion, leopard, spotted hyena, the rare wild dog and, of course, the massive herds of elephant for which the region is known. There are many ways to discover the fauna here: on day and night game drives, the latter a unique and exciting insight into the lives of nocturnal species, or perhaps floating quietly through the reed-fringed channels in a traditional dugout canoe (water levels permitting). Nature walks take you through the Linyanti River and Savute Channel, and there are a number of platforms and well-placed “hides” to surreptitiously snap photos of animals; it is an exciting immersion into a wild world. The camp itself is nestled under a shady grove of mangosteen trees, raised off the ground to overlook a large hippo-filled lagoon. The ten spacious tents are ideally situated to take advantage of the dramatic river views, and include classic safari touches: under thatch with canvas walls, outdoor showers (there’s nothing quite like a shower under the stars!) and en-suite bathroom facilities. Take a dip in the plunge pool during the afternoon, and in the cool of the evening enjoy a cocktail in the pub and a relaxing meal—the perfect way to unwind after a day of safari
